Instructional Design Manager (Remote)

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Online Learning, the Instructional Design (ID) Manager will serve as a leader and oversee the instructional design function within the Education department. The ID Manager will be responsible for aligning SMEs and IDs for creating content, project plans and timelines, course revision schedules, and themed standard templates that meet compliance and equity standards set by the Quality Control (QC) function. Course development will be a combination of online, hybrid, and in-person courses with a focus on a virtual first approach in alignment with IHI's strategy. To ensure consistency and a wide range of perspectives, the ID Manager partners with key staff from the Education Department and other key IHI departments.

Position Responsibilities:

Instructional Design

  • Oversee implementation of the instructional design process across all educational course builds
  • Standardize templates to be used in ID/SME kickoffs
  • Create and implement course maintenance schedules for new builds, revamps, and refreshes to include: KPIs, timelines, milestones, and interactions
  • Manage analytics and reporting of educational offerings to the Director of Online Learning
  • Ensure all educational offerings surpass IHI's Gold Standard
  • Lead the creation of IHI standard templating to be used by Instructional Design team on all educational offerings
  • Lead Instructional Design team in creating 'Aha' moments, situational awareness, branching scenarios, and immersive learning
  • Ensure use of Bloom's taxonomy for learning objectives
  • Lead Instructional Design team to create educational offerings rooted in andragogy, as opposed to pedagogy, with focus on the 7 principles
  • Educate and upskill instructional designers on emerging ID technologies, theories, software, and experiential learning
  • Lead weekly ID team meetings, reporting back to Sr. Director of Education
  • Support success, development, and joy of ID team members

Learning Management System (LMS)

  • Collaborate with LMS Admin on all LMS matters
  • Establish guidelines for course creation (shell and all content) within the LMS
  • Design LMS course CSS (Cascading Style Sheet) to be used for all LMS course offerings
  • Establish standards for LMS course layouts including discussion boards, bulletin boards, quizzing, weekly content, conferencing, and cohort collaboration
  • Evaluate course feedback using appropriate Kirkpatrick levels
  • Upskill Instructional Design team on LMS best practices, our standards, and advanced LMS functions
  • Partner with LMS Admin to coordinate rollouts of LMS improvements and training for ID team in conjunction
  • Lead technology migrations and updates as needed in conjunction with IT and the LMS Administrator

Cross Functional Responsibilities

  • Establish relationships with Education Department partners like:
    • LMS Admin to collaborate on LMS capabilities, limitations, access, and user experience
    • Director of Education Marketing to develop partnership for educational promotion
    • Quality Control department to ensure all courses exceed 508, web, and equity compliance
  • Establish effective working relationships with partners external to Education that will add value and insight into the offerings being planned and created, including, Design, Innovation, Project Delivery leadership, etc.

Skills, Knowledge, Abilities:

  • Expert level knowledge of andragogy (adult learning theory)
  • Thorough understanding of Bloom's taxonomy and its application to education
  • Ability to take a course through its entire life cycle using an agile process
  • Ability to make decisions independently and assess vitality of options to present recommendations when leadership approval is needed
  • Strong project management skills, including ability to create, update and pull reports for projects in project management software
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills in person and virtually
  • Ability to communicate with health care, community workers, faculty, and partners at all levels via written and verbal channels
  • Strong writing skills- ability to produce written reports that succinctly describe activities, insights, and challenges
  • Proven organizational skills
  • Agility to manage the needs of the varies educational delivery platforms, access risks, and deliver results
  • Ability to work cross functionally across multiple disciplines within the company
  • Knowledge and ability to recognize and integrate differences and understand the positive effects of diversity on team and organizational development
  • Ability to work independently and manage self towards goals, while being a team player
  • Ability to utilize whole systems thinking
  • Ability to coach and motivate team and others

Position Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's degree in adult learning theory or education related field
  • 5-7 years instructional design experience
  • Prior experience:
    • Managing others
    • Managing the full life cycle of course creation
    • Teaching in-person and online courses/classes
    • Creating interactive eLearnings
    • Creating courses/classes for the health care industry
  • Demonstrated success using the following systems:
    • LMS
    • Authoring Tool Sets
    • Microsoft Office Suite
    • Project Management Software/Tools
  • Commitment to equity, anti-racism, and the improvement of societal systems
  • Commitment to IHI values


  • Master's degree in adult learning theory or educational field
  • Experience working in a remote setting
